OUR SENIOR COMMUNITY AT A GLANCE
Harris County, one of the largest counties in the country and home to Houston, counted 252,895 adults age 65 years of age and older within its political boundaries in 2004 (Texas State Data Center, 2004). With the aging of the Baby Boomers and the influx of 1 million new households by 2025 (Houston-Galveston Area Council, 2003), this group is expected to grow dramatically, making factors affecting seniors all that more important. By 2030, national projections estimate that the population of those 65 years of age and older will make up almost 20% of the general population (Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics, 2008). MOVING TOWARD A SENIOR-FRIENDLY FUTURE
According to Harris County Area Agency on Aging, senior-centered organizations recognize seven characteristics of a community consciously seeking the physical and mental well-being of its seniors:
- Opportunities for seniors to participate in physical activities;
- Vaccination programs to protect against influenza and pneumonia;
- Cancer screening programs;
- Programs that educate seniors about achieving good health, maintaining it, and dealing with disease;
- Accessible health care;
- Screening and care for mental health problems; and
- Programs that support caregivers and their education
