The long-term outcome of our Learning Center is to eliminate barriers of access to quality childcare. We support mothers/parents as they achieve their higher educational goals by providing a licensed early childhood development center on the campuses of vocational institutions, community colleges and universities throughout Houston.
At our Learning Center, we provide age-appropriate developmental learning activities, manipulatives, technology, and learning materials for exploration and discovery in a small classroom environment with a 1:15 teacher-to-student ratio. The centers are designed to:
- Complement and enhance the child’s current learning and development
- Provide a safe, instructional environment for the child while mom is taking evening classes
- Provide convenience for moms who can have childcare that is easily accessible
- Provide reassurance for moms who are now able to check on their child during class break
The centers focus on providing extended interactive learning opportunities for attendees. During this time, children are focused on achieving the following activities:
- Homework assistance
- Study time
- STAR prep
- Healthy snacks
- Learn and play activities
- Educational computer time
- Practice math
- Practice reading and writing skills
Overall, the YWCA Houston Mobile Learning Centers help women/parents balance family with the demands of post-secondary education.
